What would Company XYZ do?

  • 1 min read

When I started working or consulting for a company, I often get asked what would my previous employer do given the challenge they have?   Granted, I was blessed with experience from great companies and people that others respect.
But I politely decline to spell out the solution out of context. Not only for confidentiality reason, but also reapplying everything they do would be the easy but wrong answer.
Personally, if my value-add is merely reapplying that solution, I wouldn’t be doing my job right. And they would have invited a dish to a party but checked the chef at the door.  But it is not about me.
Every situation and context is different. Capabilities, Priorities, Relationships. What problem are you trying to solve, what constraint to unlock?
But I like to engage in business stories, where the circumstances, thought process and learning are taken into account.  If in the same position, would I have made the same decision?
Fast forward to the problem at hand – how can we now build that holistic understanding together to come up with our solution?  So that we can share our battle story with others in the future?
