Why are there so many coffee shops?

  • 2 min read

Why are there so many coffee shops or restaurants, while new ones still open every day, every block? Aren’t there enough chain stores already?  How much more coffee can people drink?
The shops may even source their beans and bakery from the same suppliers, have similar menus and pricing.  But each has their character and own take on a coffee, a drink, or a dish, how they are served, how they are put together.   You may visit out of curiosity or convenience first, but you return for a reason.
My friend Ron told me a story years back that I still remember today. Think about a restaurant that you returned time and time again. Was it for the food, the environment, or the experience? You may not remember the food you had or how it tasted, but you will probably remember the server that made you laugh.
You have been on project after project, some smoother and others less so. What makes some more enjoyable than others? Maybe the results, recognition, or learning that made you proud.  How did the team and leader make you feel being a part of the team?
Back to your own shop.  What is your take on your craft, and the relationships you want to build?  There will always be many and new coffee shops.  What is the menu and experience you serve that will keep them coming back?
